Teachers Working in Minority Schools in Greek Thrace and ICTs: Minority Women and Computer Literacy

This article is based on a research conducted in West Thrace, a region in North Greece bordering Turkey and Bulgaria, where a Muslim minority of about 120.000 individuals live. The research was conducted among 71 Muslim and Christian teachers working in minority primary schools, at Evros region. The aim of this research is to present how these teachers are connected to ICTs and mainly to detect their opinion on minority women computer literacy.
Generally speaking, members of minority groups and people from lower socioeconomic groups have less access to technology and because of this they are likely to be further disadvantaged from attaining positions in today’s labour market and economy, widening the economic divisions that already exist. Due to the fact that a high percentage of the minority women in West Thrace are excluded from the local social being and the labour market, attitudes and re-education of teachers who teach the young members of the minority could contribute to change the social context of the female part of this community by promoting the use of ICTs among girls, mothers and women of the minority.
