Indigenous Knowledge and Biodiversity Conservation in Sabah, Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the twelve "mega diversity" countries in the world. The rich biological resource have given rise to rich cultural heritage of sustainable use amongst indigenous people of Malaysia, especially those dependent on the forest for their livelihood. The element of the rich cultural heritage, which related to nature, are reflected in their belief and religious system.
Sabah's indigenous peoples have over the centuries developed unique systems to safeguard and establish a peaceful existence for their communities, a sustainable livelihood and the use of resources within their surroundings. These indigenous system have a harmonious relationship with nature, dignity, subsistance and sustainability.
Although rural communities continues to maintain and practice their adat (traditional set of values), these adat are being threatened by the arrival of a new value system. This traditional knowledge has been denigrated or even no longer existing due to lack of conscious on its importance.
