The Qur’anic Perspectives on Multicultural Counseling: A Triad Experience of Malaysian
Research indicates that when multiculturalisms are practiced, clients feel more understood and respected, hence the counseling services become more efficient (Ponterotto, Casas, Suzuki &Alexander, 2001). On the other hand, when multicultural issues are ignored, clients feel that the counselors are unable to be in the clients’ frame of reference, premature termination may take place. Accordingly, this paper aims to discuss the needs and rationales for multicultural counseling in a multiracial and multi religious country. It highlights the Qur’anic verses that acknowledge to the concept of multiculturalism. Specifically, the classic and contemporary interpretations of two relevant verses of The Holy Qur’an (49: 13) and (109:6) are deliberated. The paper then explicates the importance of ethnic racial identity in multicultural counseling. Next, it highlights the resistances towards multicultural counseling. Finally, this paper illustrates a triad experience of Islam-Buddhism-Christian multicultural counseling in Malaysia.
