A Comparative Analysis of the Legislation of Various Countries to Help Mitigate the Conditions of the Disabled in India

It is the responsibility of all civil societies to create opportunities for their disabled so that they can lead their life with dignity and self sufficiency. In developing countries like India, the disabled have always been a neglected lot. Before globalization swept the economy, they were taken care of by the joint family system. With nuclear families becoming the norm, they are left to fend for themselves. Law can be used as an instrument to bring about radical changes in their lives. Meaningful and implementable legislation can go a long way in ameliorating their condition. I have made an attempt to highlight the deficiencies in the Indian legislation related to the disabled. Through a comparative analysis of the Indian Disability Statute with the legislation of some developed countries, I wish to bring out those aspects of contemporary statutes of other countries which if adopted in India can help the disabled: get access to public places, get proper educated, overcome discrimination in jobs and other fields of life.

I am a law school student, currently in the second year. I have special interest in constitutional law and environmental law, in the near future I wish to take up environmental law as a career. I have interned with an NGO called 'Arushi',which works for the welfare of the disabled children. I am an avid reade, love to swim and I am also trained in the Indian classical dance Bharatnatyam.
