Theory of knowledge is one of the topics that a number of scholars have shown their interest. Among them are al-Ghazali, Shirazi and al-Attas. Another Muslim whose work in this field has not been explored is Andalusian scholar al-Shatibi whose masterpiece al-Muwafaqat has drawn a special attention from those whose specialiasation is in Islamic jurisprudence. Apart from jurisprudence theories, al-Shatibi has devoted a number of pages in this book to depict his own theory of knowledge which he based on his understanding of the two major sources of Islamic Law, the Qur’an and the Hadith. Thus, this paper aims to discover his remarkable theory of knowledge as discovered in his al-Muwafaqat. Therefore, this paper is divided into three parts: life of al-Shatibi, overview of some of Muslim scholars’ theory of knowledge and al-Shatibi’s theory of knowledge. At the end, it is expected that al-Shatibi’s thought will be highlighted as regard to the theory of knowledge.
